# Open Source to require documentation for the first time for AI?

Hi @shujisado-san, your timeline is precise. It was in early 2023, with the development of the EU AI Act with the exceptions for Open Source AI, when we realized that a definition for Open Source AI was much needed, and we organized the first meeting at the Mozilla headquarters in [June 2023](https://opensource.org/blog/towards-a-definition-of-open-artificial-intelligence-first-meeting-recap). Before that, we were exploring the topic as of early 2022. Since then, we have opened up the discussions more and more, reaching out to experts and community members. Here’s a rough timeline:
