More information about Hugging Face’s effort to open source DeepSeek has been published here:

> A group of Hugging Face engineers, including the company's head of research, are spearheading an effort to replicate DeepSeek's R1 model.

> Technically, R1 is “open” in that the model is permissively licensed, which means it can be deployed largely without restrictions. However, R1 isn’t “[open source](https://techcrunch.com/2024/10/28/we-finally-have-an-official-definition-for-open-source-ai/)” by the widely accepted definition because some of the tools used to build it are shrouded in mystery. Like many high-flying AI companies, DeepSeek is loathe to reveal its secret sauce.
